Rescuing the children of Honduras

We have been greatly blessed to have the presence of our very own pediatrician, Dr. Gary Harding and his loving wife, Ouida, with us for three weeks. Dr. Harding, with the support of Nurse Suyapa and volunteers Rachel and Lauren, visited several remote mountain communities whose inhabitants live in extreme poverty with the intention of seeking malnourished children in need of the rehabilitation services offered by PAHS.The rescue missions proved fruitful as three little ones are now part of our Nutritional Rehab program as a result of these rescue missions. It is impressive to witness Dr. Harding’s great desire to save starving children from hunger and from misery along with his staunch commitment to seeing them healthy.

A visit from San Gabriel Academy

Students from San Gabriel Academy in Los Angeles, CA visited our campus and volunteered their time to help with bean harvesting and the child care in our Casita Feliz. They were visiting our community as part of a Maranatha Mission Team to the local our local academy Centro Educacional Adventista.During their time here they also held Bible School classes filled with fun activities for our children. We are grateful for their attentions and for their help!

Magic Beans

This is our summer time and although we live in a very temperate climate the sun still shines hot and bright. Under this sunshine our children, teens, employees and volunteers have labored to harvest and abundant crop of beautiful red beans. The quality and quantity of this crop clearly indicate a blessing from God in 2012. Our children have enjoyed the work and have made it into evening entertainment. We have also been delighted to have volunteers who visited our campus and chose to help us harvest beans. The beautiful legumes will be used as seed to distribute to poor farmers in the driest areas of the southern Honduras. We hope that they too will be blessed with a crop similar to ours.

Fountainview Academy

This year’s graduation class of Fountain View Academy in Canada chose to come to our community for their Senior Class trip. While here the Seniors chose a variety of projects to benefit our campus. They took turns over the span of 10 days to help in the daily caretaking of the little patients in the Casita Feliz. Others organized a Music Camp for the children and teens from our Homes. Our children were thrilled to be learning music in this fun and entertaining way. Some in the group dedicated their time to furthering the construction of the new building that will house our Nutritional Rehab Center. We are deeply grateful for all of the contributions that these young people made to our campus life.

The Rocky Mountain Conference organized a mission team; many of them were students and faculty of Campion Academy in Colorado. Several of the large team had been here before. Their main projects were the reconstruction of the Children’s Nutritional Rehabilitation Hospital and a new Multi-Purpose Building. The great effort expended by the members of this team can now be appreciated in the progress made in these two projects.  The team was led by Youth Director, Benjie Maxson, with the support of Nate Marin. We hope that this hardworking team will return soon. Thank you to each one for your hard work!

Each year this group made up of youth and their families bring great joy and happiness to our children who love their company. The group, led by Dr. Thomas Wieg, has become a very special part of the PAHS family. This youth group from Chico and Oakhurst California came to our campus to improve the lives of our children and lighten the load of our staff. The group completed several projects one of which was a ramp so that wheelchair-bound children, can get in and out of the Children’s Home.

New Promotional Video Production Begins

A former long-term volunteer, Meranda Beerman, had the vision of having a short video made to tell the story of our work in Honduras. With the support of family and friends she raised the necessary funds to have producer, Bryan Fellows, come to our campus and conduct interviews and take video of daily life on campus. We are very grateful and look forward to be able to tell more people about the important work being done here with the children and the families and communities they come from.

Taking physical and spiritual healing

Brad Alcorn organized a Medical Team made up of physicians and nurses to come deliver care to our area and they chose to start their week of health care services with our campus community. They are working in conjunction with our nurses as well as partnering with the organization Heart for Honduras. We are grateful for the professional care and generous spirit of this team!

We are very grateful for a wonderful donation made possible by Reach Out Orphanages Ministry, directed by Jorge and Tara García. Together with a few friends they fitted each child and teenager with a new pair of black Toms shoes (Shoes for a Better Tomorrow). The children received this gift with happiness, gratitude and marveled at the novelty of them.

Mercy in Motion

It was a joy to have with us once again our friends Paul and Kay Newby, who pastor the Assembly of God Church in Sulphur Springs, Texas. This is the Newby’s third trip to our campus. They organized a small group of friends and family named Mercy in Motion. This group put up lovely curtains in our Casita Feliz, and they also made several maintenance repairs and improvements for greater comfort and ease of care delivery. They put down tile in our Guest House and handed out food in poor communities as well. We are very grateful for the love and support they brought to our campus.

The Rotary Club of Lions, based in San Pedro Sula and through their ophthalmologic Hospital conducted a brigade in the PAHS' Campus to serve more than one hundred people, most of them elderly people who receive a test and lenses at a very low cost. Our children and youth also received attention, and some of them got their first pair of glasses. We thank the young Rotarians for their willingness and cooperation in our efforts to bring health to the needy.
