#GivingTuesday: Together we Give

FB Cover GivingTuesday PAHS .jpg

Homelessness is widespread right now in Honduras. A complete lockdown for most of the year resulted in loss of jobs for parents and hunger for their children, and 2 major Hurricanes in November left many families struggling to survive the aftermath without a home or personal necessities. A year when trusting in the generosity of neighbors and the kindness of strangers has become one of the last hopes many have. ♥️

Many will be spending the upcoming holidays in a shelter after loosing their homes to floods or landslides caused by both hurricanes.

Today is Giving Tuesday - a special day to GIVE - and making a difference is very easy!

Please help us help families in need by giving at www.panamhealth.org ❣️ Thank you for your generosity!

Hurricane Eta foreshadowing a new catastrophe for Honduras

Up to 35 inches of rain may fall through Friday in Nicaragua and Honduras

Up to 35 inches of rain may fall through Friday in Nicaragua and Honduras

  • Hurricane Eta is forecast to produce catastrophic flooding in parts of Central America.

  • Flooding from Hurricane Mitch in 1998 killed thousands in Central America.

  • Eta's forecast has some things in common with Mitch.

Hurricane Eta's potentially catastrophic strike in Central America is stirring memories of another deadly storm 22 years ago: Hurricane Mitch, which claimed thousands of lives in Honduras and Nicaragua.

After its Nicaragua landfall, Eta is forecast to move very slowly through Central America much of the rest of this week.

This slow movement over mountainous terrain could trigger catastrophic inland flash flooding and mudslides. Up to 35 inches of rain may fall through Friday in Nicaragua and Honduras, according to the NHC.

While each hurricane and its impacts are unique, this forecast has some unsettling similarities to one of the deadliest Atlantic hurricanes on record.

In late October 1998, Hurricane Mitch exploded into a Category 5 hurricane in just four days in the western Caribbean Sea north of Honduras, holding onto that intensity when it was as close as 60 miles north of the Honduran coast.

Then Mitch slowed down.

Mitch's intensity plunged from Category 5 to Category 1 before its Honduras landfall. But it took two days for Mitch's center to drift south and make that landfall, pummeling the coast and offshore islands with destructive winds, surge, waves and torrential rain.

Eta has the potential to slow down near or just after its landfall and could lash the coast of northeastern Nicaragua Tuesday longer than usual for a landfalling hurricane.

There's no guarantee Eta will end up being nearly as deadly as Mitch, but some resemblances are certainly disconcerting.

The other Crisis of the Pandemic in Honduras

As the planet is isolating and social distancing, in Honduras the population has been ordered strictly to stay home since having only 65 ventilators in the country it is not prepared for what is next.

The problem is that now the poorest families - who live on day to day subsistence - are hungry people and desperation is mounting.

Part of the solution PAHS is working towards is to help gather basic grains to put food packages together to deliver to the families most in need.

Prayers, donations, ideas and networking connections are welcomed as we face this crisis together!

The month of September provides many opportunities for fun to our children. Besides the excitement building up to the Independence Day parades mid-month, September 10 is a day set aside to celebrate children.Piñatas, sweets, games, gifts and many visitors were all part of the Child’s Day celebrations on our campus this year for the children of the Casita Feliz as well as the Homes.  It is a special time set aside to recognize the love and joy that these special gifts of God bring to our World!

'Twas the Night before Christmas...

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse......well, not true here because there is a lot of movement in the Casita Feliz with the Tamale dinner!

Tech School Independence Day Parade

Our Tech school gave a display of patriotism and joy celebrating Honduras 193 years of independence with a beautiful parade, floats were decorated with the different technical trades from the school, from sewing, auto mechanic, wood carving and wood working, and one specialy design for the tech school's services of turism and souvenirs, which had the support of some of our volunteers.

A great week with the Sperro Mission Team!

The Sperro Group had a busy week, they helped with the construction of the new Clinic/Admin building, helped painting the new Rehab Center and the girls' Dorm, and spent some quality time with the children and teens from our homes, their time shared in our campus was a great experience not only for them but to our children, Thank You to each member of the Sperro Mission Team!

Computers Donated to the Tech School

Our vocational school received a donation of computers through Project Honduran Child which were acquired by Jerry & Ruth Wolgemuth from Computer Ministries of Pennsylvania. These will be used for teaching computer science skills to students in vocational training at the Dr. Stephen Youngberg Technical Vocational School, an outreach of Pan American Health Service, Inc. in Peña Blanca, Honduras.

Little William arrived

Today we welcomed William, a tiny boy 13 moths of age weighing 5.5 Kg (12 lb. ).  Accompanied by his grandmother, William -- suffering from third degree malnutrition -- was brought to our campus by the county health authorities. His health is fragile, however we are confident that with the tender loving care, medications and with God's blessing, William is on a solid path to recovering his health. We look forward to seeing his first smile!

Mend a Child's mission trip

IMG_9296.jpg

Our campus was blessed by a mission team from the Mend a Child Foundation lead by Dr. Tom and Calle Wieg last week. During their visit they constructed a sidewalk from the Children's Home to the Chapel & main kitchen. This special proyect was made to facilitate the mobility of Jenny - who uses a leg braces and a walker, and Lily - who uses a wheel chair to get around. The team also worked on the Admin/Temp Clinic building by pouring concrete for an external sidewalk and the bathrooms for the outclinic patients. It was a great experience for the children to have this group of old friends and "extended family" visiting  our Home again.

Mel's Dream Team

The Mel's Dream Team, from Alberta, Canada, along with our friends Jeff Neddles and John Beldon, are working in the final touches for the new Hospital. They are installing the ceiling in this building. Mel's dream was to come to PAHS in 2008 but due to a fatal accident he was unable to see his vision realized. Friends, family and colleagues have come to PAHS in 2009, 2011 and 2014 to make his dream of service come true. Mel's Dream Team wish to express their dedication and committment to serving the needs of the children at PAHS.
